Workshop on
Language Contact in South Asia
Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL)
Mysore, India
January 10 – 31, 2011

       The Workshop is being held from 10th January 2011 to 31st January 2011 at CIIL, Mysore, India following the SALA 29 (6th – 8th Jan ’10). The Workshop is mainly intended as a refresher course for linguists, language teachers, and researchers in the area of Convergence and Contact.

        The Course Director is Professor Hans Henrich Hock. Other prominent scholars including Professors Rajendra Singh, K.V. Subbarao and Rajesh Sachdeva will give a series of lectures and guide the practical sessions. The workshop will consist of morning lectures, afternoon work sessions and special presentations. Some of the topics to be covered are – Vertical and lateral language relationship, Mechanisms of contact-induced change, Substratum vs. Convergence, Convergence: local vs. global, South Asia as a Linguistic Area, Dravidian substratum hypothesis, Convergence rather than subversion, Current trend towards monolingualism, English and South Asian languages and Regional Convergence in the Northwest, Northeast, and Central area, as well as in Nagpur and Kupwar.

        This workshop is mainly intended for the researchers and faculty of Indian educational institutions. The intake is limited to 50. Participants should have completed Post-Graduation in linguistics or language studies. Those having sociolinguistic training/experience will be preferred. All participants should be present for the whole period of the workshop.

       A Registration fee of Rs.100/- per participant will be charged. A Registration form is enclosed. Out-station participants who are unable to procure a travel grant from their respective institutions (subject to submission of a certificate to that effect from the concerned heads of institutions) will be provided some travel support as admissible by rules. Submission of photocopies of all travel tickets is a must in such cases.  Local participants will be paid only conveyance charges. Free board and lodging of a modest kind will be provided to the participants.
