Dr. B. A. Sharada, represents the Central Institute of Indian Languages. The paper presented by her in the Prof. M. B. Emeneau Centenary International Conference on South Asian Linguistics is titled "M. B. Emeneau: A Citation Indexing Study with Special Reference to India as a Linguistic Area: A Web Resource For Researchers".
Dr. Sharada's paper analyses the contribution of M. B. Emeneau to Linguistics. The paper cites the data sources on Prof. M. B. Emeneau's contribution that was collected by searching the main bibliography for Prof. M. B. Emeneau's works and recognizing references of Prof. M. B. Emeneau, for the citation file. The paper acknowledges that the best sources for doing the citation indexing for journals are ISI, SSCI and A & HCI databases, but because of the non-availability of Prof. M. B. Emeneau's works on such databases, the major part of the data was collected manually.
Regarding the methodology, Dr. Sharada explains the process of collecting the data using index cards with a mention of relevant citation in the overleaf, manually. The procedure involved classification of 25 documents from Prof. M. B. Emeneau's bibliography under the heading " India as a Linguistic Area", out of which 8 are journal articles, 15 published in books and 2 unpublished ones. She proposes to classify the bibliography into two categories: Historical and Sociolinguistic study of Indian languages and Emergence of the sub-field Areal Linguistics.
Categorizing the works of Prof. M. B. Emeneau on a subject wise basis, has led to the conclusions like categorization of the term Linguistic area; entries into language families such as Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, Irano-Indian, Munda language and Tibeto-Burman; significant citations in papers connected with South Asia and references to Emeneau for working on many topics related to linguistics. She also mentions the sources for Prof. M. B. Emeneau's works, journal citations and Emeneau web page. Dr. Sharada has inferred the impact of Prof. M. B. Emeneau's works in the study of India as a Linguistic Area in respect to historical and socio linguistic study of Indian Languages and emergence of sub field areal linguistics.
In conclusion, Dr. Sharada has assessed Prof. M. B. Emeneau's impact on linguistics through journal citations, year wise breakup of citing files and manual citation indexing study. Her paper gives a comprehensive idea of both Prof. M. B. Emeneau's works and its influence on linguistic area.
In the discussion that followed the session, it was emphasized that it was H.V. Velton, who coined the term Linguistic area. The features of Linguistic Area, Citation Indexing, and the limitations such as single author, subject of interest and others, with reference to Prof. M. B. Emeneau were discussed.
The Chairperson of the seminar, Dr. Rajendra Singh observed that it was necessary to wait till other facts came up and it was necessary to keep our doors open for papers to be questioned. |
