Teaching and Research Experience:

i)

Formerly, Director of Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) - the apex national institution of the Government of India, dealing with all Indian Languages, with a special focus on Tribal and Endangered languages; December, 2000 - June 2009.

ii)

Studied B.A. Honors in Linguistics at Calcutta 1969-1972 (designated Eshan Scholar for having secured the highest marks in all B.A. Hons subjects), and Master’s at the University of Delhi 1972-74 (awarded Uggarsain Memorial Gold Medal), and a semester at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA in 1978.

iii)

Earned Ph.D. from Delhi in 1979 in Syntax and Semantics, with special reference to Maithili (then considered a dialect of Hindi facing extinction on social and formal domains – but now one of the 8th Schedule languages).

iv)

A reputed poet-playwright-essayist in Bangla and Maithili, with six collections of poems and twelve plays in Maithili as well as six books of literary essays and poems in Bangla, besides translating several books. His own anthology of poems has been translated into English, German and Tamil. Some of his plays have been recently translated into Bengali, Hindi and Hindi. Writes with a pseudonym in Maithili – ‘Nachiketa’.

Authored over 150 research papers in Linguistics, Literary Studies, and allied areas in English, Hindi and Bengali and edited about 10 books.

Supervised 14 doctoral and 21 M. Phil. level dissertations.

vii)

Designed and created 545 short films in English on teaching of Bangla, Marathi Tamil and Kannada languages under CIIL’s ‘Bhasha Mandakini Project’.

viii)

General Editor of the prestigious series from Sage titled ‘Language and Development’ (LAD). Currently, finalizing ten English to Indian Languages Bilingual Basic Dictionaries to be published by Longman-CIIL.

ix)

Taught Linguistics, Translation Studies, English, Comparative Literature and Anthropology as at the Universities of Delhi (1979 & 1983-85), Baroda (1979-81), Surat (1981-85) and Hyderabad: (1987-2000) as Lecturer (1979-81), Reader (1981-87) and Professor of Linguistics (1987-2000).
