Formerly, Director of Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) - the apex national institution of the Government of India, dealing with all Indian Languages, with a special focus on Tribal and Endangered languages; December, 2000 - June 2009.

Studied B.A. Honors in Linguistics at Calcutta 1969-1972 (designated Eshan Scholar for having secured the highest marks in all B.A. Hons subjects), and Master’s at the University of Delhi 1972-74 (awarded Uggarsain Memorial Gold Medal), and a semester at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA in 1978. |

A reputed poet-playwright-essayist in Bangla and Maithili, with six collections of poems and twelve plays in Maithili as well as six books of literary essays and poems in Bangla, besides translating several books. His own anthology of poems has been translated into English, German and Tamil. Some of his plays have been recently translated into Bengali, Hindi and Hindi. Writes with a pseudonym in Maithili – ‘Nachiketa’. |
