To co-ordinate the work of the State Institute of Languages,Tribal Research Institutes and Bureaus, University Departments of languages and linguistics and other academic bodies/organizations.

To develop suitable translation techniques and conduct training programmes for translators.

To apply modern technology to the teaching of Indian languages with a view to promote their effective use in media and communication.

To develop computer based software relevant and necessary for the production of instructional material of various kinds for the teaching and promotion of different Indian languages in different situations.

To produce electronic dictionaries and techniques for simultaneous translation across Indian languages.
