No.F.12-16/2006/NLSI        8th May 2007

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you very much for accepting to participate in the NLSI Summer School. The response from all quarters has been so overwhelming that we are at times losing track of the participants. As many as 400 participants-including 300 students/researchers- have confirmed and the fact that it is spread over 40 days with rather different dates of arrival has created several issues for the management to cope with. But I do hope all will be willing to endure difficulties including those of gaps in communication and not allow any complaint to surface. Yet we are also rather excited about the creative potential that this camp offers us all as it is for the first time we will have speakers of languages belonging to all four families alongside teachers from most departments of linguistics under one roof and hence we may be in a position to undertake various activities to involve one and all.

May I request you to kindly fill in the attached form and also have a look at our website regarding information on the NLSI Summer School? We have sought information about your travel plans, about the courses/workshops that you want to participate in and those that you may want to offer. We would also want you to bring copies of your writings/papers for circulation and the syllabus used in your departments for teaching.

Enclosed herewith please find a list of the courses on offer. We have mentioned names of some faculty members under each course but we hope you will be able to add your own name in these groups (in more than one group if you wish) and get in touch with the coordinator [CIIL faculty] directly over-e-mail or even telephone. Please do have a look at the course content in your own area of interest and specialization and help the coordinator to design the course(s) and fill in the right content. You may also bring materials for practical classes to be held in each course. In fact the main thrust of this summer school is ‘doing linguistics responsibly with understanding of social consequences’ and therefore practical issues must remain the object of focus. That is why both descriptive linguistics and applied sociolinguistics with pedagogy and language development will be of foremost interest. We also want to move beyond the notion of idiolect and standard speech and explore methods to assess variability and varieties. Ethnolinguistic vitality and issues of endangerment with documentation plans should also engage us.

The Basic Plan

Obligatory basic course for students with lots of practical work [may be done by two or more sets of senior faculty members teaching nearly the same course since 250 students may be involved]

Obligatory workshops for faculty members- designing tools, critical review of literature, presenting accounts of languages and state of affairs in the field

Optional courses on a variety of themes/topics

Special tutorial sessions

Special lecture series

Reports to be prepared by Researchers/faculty/groups

Translation of tools in Indian languages

Action plan for each department, each zone and if possible each speech community as well

Resource allocation and planning

The exact time-table is being planned but can actually come in to effect only when we receive inputs from one and all. We are convinced there will be enough loop holes in the planning and short comings at this stage since we have never held an event of this size before. But it is for us to use our collective wisdom to make the most of this massive exercise. We will value constructive suggestions from all quarters.  I also want to inform you that no more participants will accepted at this stage.

We do hope you will have no difficulty in reaching as Bangalore and Mysore are well connected by Bus and train [including Volvo buses near the railway station].  The prepaid taxis from the airport charge you much more than the permissible amount to Mysore and may not be reimbursed in full since it is connected by rail/road. The auto rickshaws from the Mysore bus stand/railway station to the Institute [located opposite B.M. Hospital on Hunsur road] will charge less than 50 rupees.

With warm personal regards

Yours sincerely,

(RAJESH SACHDEVA)
Professor cum Deputy Director
