Aims and Objectives Looking ahead, from the Director's pen CIIL :
A Legend

All through the last 32 years in existence, this Institute has worked in a number of diverse disciplines. For these disciplines that are traditionally known to be often hostile to one another- CIIL has acted as a catalytic force responsible for convergence of different ideas. Such confluences are more evident at the present moment. In fact, on the
borderlines of such largely overlapping fields lie those numerous wrkers who give birth to new approaches to the study of man and nature. As students standing at crossroads, we soon realize that events and fonnations would lead us in unearthing the secrets of the mutually engaging forces oflanguage, society and culture.

In the intervening period, CIIL has created a legend of its own by producing and archiving studies on 118 Indian languages, including 80 tribal languages, and published 490 books and monographs, including language learning materials, and created courses on cassettes in almost all major Indian languages.
The Institute has recorded and beamed through AIR a course on Hindi for radio listners, and produced in-house video films to create for various speech communities. Besides, it has
supplied literacy and post-literacy materials, crafted special instructional materials for Kendriya Vidyalayas under its apni boli series, and trained over 8,000 in-service teachers from defferent states in 15 constitutional languages.
