Language in Space

A recent book on Folklore
Taking into consideration, a need to expand the activities of the group and to make it more socially relevant, it has been decided to start research and teaching on clinical linguistics. The Course is likely take off in the year 2003.
Geolinguistics: Geolinguistics Group is concerned with thematic mapping, in the literal cartopgraphic as well as the discursive discourse sense, of language and related phenomena, based on primary and secondary data and operates in analog and digital modes by using Geographical Information System (GIS)

A Literacy Atlas of India, a monograph on the Communication Potential in the Tribal Populations of Assam and Madhya Pradesh, Spatial Aspects of Language as an edited volume of the proceedings of a seminar are the salient publications of the Group.

It is engaged, in association with other Research Groups, in the Pahari Dialect Survey, Studies of Language Use, Ethno-Linguistic and Cultural Documentation,etc. With the expected outcome of a Dialect Atlas of Chamba District in Himachal Pradesh, an Atlas of Language Use in Pondicherry and the Cultural Contours of the Kota in the Nilgiris.

Seminars/Workshops are held on matters of social concern and intrest, as for example, the recent one on Tribal Bilingualism in India. The Group proposes to undertake studies such as the one on Linguistic Landscaping in Jharkhand and hold seminars on this subject with special refernce to the newly formed States in India. The Nature of Indian Cultural Space as a borader issue of relevance and


 
importance would be researched into. A genral atlas of language and one on tribal languages based on the recent Censues, an atlas of phonology and another on language-use in India are contemplated. The Group is actively associated with the creation of Institute"s Language Information Service of India.
Folklore group has been established in order to coordinate and implement research work on cultural aspects of landguagae phenomena as revealed mainly in the oral traditions of the country. The main objectives of this unit are:
1.
To collect, record and preseve traditions, beliefs, manners, customs, folktales, traditional ballads, folksongs, proverbs, riddles and other relevant materials in a scientific manner and to undertake their systematic study with a view to establishing Pan-Indian and regional universals in the area of Indian folklore.
2.
To develop a scentific methodology and promote serious research in the area of Indian Folklore
3.
To use folkloristic materials in the prepration of teaching materials especially by exploiting its potential for culturally-oriented education.
4.
To set up a taxonomy on the basis of diffusion of Indian folklore.
5.
To collect bibliographical information regarding collection analysis and publication of folklore materials in India.
6.
To assist all such governmental and non-governmental agencies working in the area of Indian folklore.
7
To co-ordinate research in folklore and folkloristics in India.
