Folklore materials are collected, processed and published by this group. CIIL has tape archive of the folklore materials of the country and has so far recorded such data in 108 Indian languages.
The folklore group has been responsible for having given impetus to start departments of folklore at many Universities in India, to name a few, Universites of Mysore, Mangalore, Telgu, Tejpur, Guwahati, Maduarai Kamraj and North Eastern Hill University. It has also organized World Congress of Folklore at CIIL.
There are monographs discussing theoretical issues, edited volumes with contributions from reputed scholars from India and abroad and proceedings of conferences and seminars published by the faculty of the folklore group.
Quantitative Linguistics: This group works on three major areas, namely, interdisciplinary research in related areas of linguistics with mathematical and statistical orientation, data processing, the group has responsblity to develop research design, processing of research data and statistical analysis of empirical data pertaining to projects of differnt research groups of the institute. As regards documentation, relevant literature related to linguistics and allied disciplines is documented to facilitate the educational planners, administrators, policy makers and
researchers.The development and, analysis of corpora in Indian
languages and Language Information
Services (LIS-India) are some of the major projects undertaken by the research group
.Apart from the above activities, it conducts workshops, orientation courses and conferences -both
national and international in the area
of computational linguistics, applied
statistics and quantitative linguistics'
3. Center for Language Planning and Development
Indian Grammatical Tradition: In order to bring forth the traditional theories on language for the development of Indian Linguistics, the group conducts series of dialouges between traditional scholars and modern linguists on different themes such as the notion of word and word classes, Saabdaboodha (word and its meaning), taatparyaartha (the intended meaning), vaakya kaaraka (sentence and sentence meaning), time/tense, aspects/mood and syntax.
The group has taken up projects in the areas of Sanskrit Subhashitas and Vedic studies and imparts training in the prepration of T.V. scripts for learning and teaching Sanskrit. The group plans to publish the proceedings of the dialouges.
Sociolinguistics: The thrust areas of this research group are language planning, study of minority languages and sociolinguistic profiles.
